St. Johns Speaks - a collaboration with RHS Urban Griots
In February 2016, Urban Griots students partnered with St. Johns Main Street to celebrate the hopes, dreams and stories of St. Johns, which is changing rapidly. Photojournalist Bobby Abrahamson came into our classroom to share his expertise, teach students photojournalism skills and and help guide this project.
Students first took pictures and wrote their own hopes and dreams for their community, then we created a team that interviewed residents, took their pictures and posted the results as part of an interactive display. At our next collaborative event, we will continue our interviewing station, and feature youth poetry, in partnership with Spit/WRITE, thanks to a grant from the Regional Arts & Culture Council.
